ICELAND, PUFFIN SANCTUARY
Guilaine Bergeret & Frédéric Labie
Documentary I France I 51'
Every year, after 6 months spent offshore, the Atlantic puffin returns to the slopes of the Westman Islands, off the Icelandic coast. Its exotic physique and its sometimes affectionate behavior, other times quarrelsome, but often considered "comic" because of its clumsy gait, make this seabird particularly endearing.
National emblem and tourist attraction, its fate nevertheless worries Icelanders because, for a decade now, couples have stopped reproducing. Faced with this observation, a handful of enthusiasts are mobilizing to save the puffin which represents the identity of the island.
